Heterotrophic algae can grow 20 times thicker than autotrophs, as long as necessary nutrients and oxygen are available. No need for race tracks, nor large ponds.This allows the production systems to be compact.

Unlike Green Algae farms that take up vast land and spaces, SPAGS are designed heterotrophic or brown algae cultures. SPAGS, the aerobic fermenter will produce culture that is 20 times denser than that of green algae. Furthermore, this fermentation technology is not limited by the amount of available sunlight. Growth will be much faster.
The annual production of net DHA from a pilot plant like this can produce 20 tons of DHA rich extracted oil. Productivity is over 100 times per floor space than that of green algae. It grows like yeast;
the difference between solar sourced energy and using carbon as an energy source to fuel growth.
